09/07 New Fairfield 2 - Newtown 3

On Saturday, New Fairfield suffered a tough loss in this season's opener. The game was  scoreless until Newtown took the lead in the third. New Fairfield came back and went ahead in the fifth. Donny Allen singled and advanced to third on 2 passed balls while Chris Peck walked. After a perfectly executed double steel and an RBI single by Andrew Ballas, New Fairfield took the lead 2 to 1. Newtown threatened to tie in the bottom of the inning on an attempted squeeze bunt but both batter and runner were gunned down at fIrst and home by catcher Chris Cannaverde and fIrst baseman Mike Schirmer.  Greg Irwin struck out the next batter to end a perfect inning! Newtown scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead and clinch the win. Steven James singled in the sixth and Donny Allen tripled in the seventh but no runs scored. Pitching well for NF were starter Chris Peck, Greg Irwin and Danny FiImer.

09/08 New Fairfield 8 - Newtown 3

Sunday's game was an exciting win for New Fairfield! Newtown took a one to nothing lead in the fIrst but NF was ready for the come-back in the second. John Hickey  started off the inning with a walk followed by Chris Peck and Mike Schirmer singles to load the bases. Andrew Ballas and James Purtle both singled and NF went ahead 3 to 1. But New Fairfield bats kept on  swinging in the fourth. Chris Cannaverde started off with a single, John Hickey walked and Chris Peck singled to load the bases. RBI's by Mike Schirmer, Cory Calvin, James Purtle and Scott Allen and an RBI single by Andrew Ballas scored 5 more runs and gave NF a comfortable lead. Newtown scored two more in the sixth but were never able to come back. Chris Peck doubled in the fifth but was stranded on third. John Hickey started on the mound for NF pitching 5 full innings and striking out six while allowing only one run. Excellent relief by Donny Allen. in the sixth and seventh held on to the win for New Fairfield.

09/14 New Milford 8 - New Fairfield 0.

NF struggled at the plate in losing to New Milford. Some excellent plays in the field by Danny Filmer and Chris Peck kept the game alive.


09/15 New Fairfield 4 - Brookfield 3.

Solid pitching by Jon Hickey (5 innings, 5 hits, 5 strikeouts and I run allowed) and Greg Irwin propelled NF to the victory .NF went on top fIrst on a walk, a Danny Filmer bunt and a double steal. Irwin drove in the third run on a s.ingle in the fifth. Brookfield tied it up in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh a walk to Corey Calvin and Steven James' perfect bunt started off the inning. After Calvin was thrown out James reached third on two wild pitches and scored on Greg Irwin's long hit over the right fielders head. Mike Schirmer, James Purtle, Chris Cannaverde and Donny Allen made clutch plays in the field. Hickey, Chris Peck, and Andrew Ballas had the other NF hits. New Fairfield is now 2-2.

09/21 New Fairfield 8 - Ridgefield 3

Chris Peck's excellent pitching held Ridgefield to only two runs through the fIrst five innings. Greg Irwin also pitched well for innings six and seven. NF was determined to win this game right from the start. With bases loaded in the top of the first and only one out, Mike Schirmer's outstanding catch and Chris Peck's strike-out were able to hold Ridgefield scoreless. New Fairfield scored six runs in the bottom of the first. Dan Filmer's RBI single, a single by Andrew Ballas, a Chris Peck 2 RBI double, followed by RBI's by Jon Hickey and Mike Schirmer, gave NF a comfortable lead of 6-0 after one. A walk by Irwin and a second RBI single by Dan Filmer scored run number 7 for NF in the second. Singles by Chris Cannaverde and James Purtle in the third, aided by a wild pitch, added another run for a score of 8-0. Other hits for NF included singles by Chris Peck and Steven James while Cory Calvin made an excellent defensive play at third.


09/22 New Fairfield 6 - Newtown 8

Sunday's game was cut short to only 6 innings due to the maximum time limit allowed per game. Pitching for New Fairfield were Donny Allen, Jon Hickey and Dan Filmer. Newtown took an early lead of 5-0 in the first adding two more runs in the third. NF picked up one run in the fourth on a walk, a single by Dan Filmer and an RBI by Andrew Ballas. Jon Hickey singled in the fifth but was left on second. Newtown scored one run in the fifth and led 8-1. NF rallied and scored five runs in the sixth on a singles by Scotty and Donny Allen, double by Greg Irwin, a 2 RBI single by Andrew Ballas, and RBI's by Chris Cannaverde and Mike Schirmer.  The NF 13's are now 3 and 3.

09/29  New Fairfield 9 - Brookfield 4

Sunday's game was another winner! Danny Filmer started on the mound for NF holding
Brookfield to only one run through 4 innings with 7 strike outs. Steven James and Jon Hickey also pitched well. NF was off to a great start scoring 2 runs in the lst on RBI singles by Donny Allen and Chris Cannaverde. New Fairfield came out swinging in the second adding on 5 more runs. Chris Cannaverde's RBI single, followed by Mike Schirmer's RBI double and RBI's by Allen and Hickey gave NF a 7-1 lead. RBI singles by Filmer in the 3rd and James Purtle in the 6th gave NF a lead of 9-1. Brookfield threatened to Score in the 5th but second baseman Mike Schirmer made a perfect throw to catcher James Purtle who blocked the plate and threw out the runner to end the inning! Allen also singled in the 3rd and Filmer singled in the 5th. Brookfield  scored 3 runs in the 7th on 2 errors. NF is now 4-3

Greg Irwin pitched the three shutout innings as New Fairfield coasted to the victory. In the bottom of the first NF scored 8 runs. Irwin led off with a walk and Danny Filmer executed a bunt
and run for a hit and moving IrWin from first to third. Donny Allen had an infield hit and when the throw went by the first baseman two runs scored. A few walks and errors scored a few more and James Purtle doubled to deep center to drive In the final runs of the inning. In his first pitching assignment on the 60 foot 6 inch mound Corey Calvin pitched an excellent two innings. Chris Peck also pitched well in the final two innings. Chris Cannaverde had a solid hit for New Fairfield.

10/6 New Fairtield 9 -Newtown 13

Click to view fullsize imageNew Fairfied scored their first 2 runs in the third on a walk, error and Dan Filmer's RBI. Seven more runs scored in an explosive 6th inning beginning with walks by Andrew Ballas and Chris Cannaverde and a Chris Peck single to load the bases. Mike Schirmer's RBI single started the scoring followed by Jon Hickey's walk, RBI singles by Tom Fabiani, James Purtle, Greg Irwin, Dan Filmer and a sac. fly by Ballas. Pitching the fil;st five innings for New Fairfield were Jon Hickey and Dan Filmer. Mike Schirmer, who made his first appearance this fall, pitched two innings, retiring the first three batters on four pitches in the sixth while allowing one run in the seventh. Peck (2), Irwin and Schirmer added singles and James Purtle added a double. Purtle and Peck made perfect throws to Cannaverde at home throwing out Newtown baserunners. Schirmer's pick-off move to Fabiani at first gave Newtown their second out in the 7th. New Fairfield's record is now 5-4.

10/13 New Milford 8 - New Fairfield 7

New Fairfield played a solid game early on Sunday morning on the road in New Milford before losing in eight to an undefeated New Milford team. New Fairfield opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. Andrew Ballas lead off with a single and with two outs Mike Schirmer singled. With two on James Purtle hit a booming double to right center scoring I. After a Danny Filmer walk, Donny Allen hit a broken bat single to right scoring two. In the fourth NF pushed across another run to give them a 4 -O lead. Chris Peck was sailing along in the first three innings before he tired in the fourth. A few walks and some miscues in the field plated four to tie the game. Schirmer then came on in the fifth and after allowing two runs pitched two shut out innings to give NF a chance. In the top of the 7th Peck led off with a single and with lout Jon Hickey and Ballas each singled to make the score 6-5. With two out Purtle hit a grounder to second that was bobbled and by running down the line beat the throw to first to tie the game. After a Filmer walk the bases were loaded when Allen hit a ball to short left that the shortstop made an outstanding catch to safe two runs and the game for NM. In the eighth Chris Cannaverde led off with a single and with two outs and Cannaverde on second Hickey hit a ball to third and after Cannaverde avoided the tag the ball was thrown over the first baseman's head to give NF the lead 7-6. Unfortunately New Milford scored 2 in the bottom of the 8th to pullout the win. Everyone in the lineup reached base and Purtle, Hickey and Ballas each had two hits. New Fairfield's record is now 5-5.

10/27 New Fairfield 7 Bethel 6.

Click to view fullsize imageAfter Bethel jumped out to a 1-0 lead NF scored 3 in the bottom of the first on walks to Greg Irwin and Danny Filmer a 2 REI single by Donnie Allen and a Andrew Ballas RBI groundout. James Purtle also doubled with two outs but was thrown out at the plate on an excellent throw. Irwin pitched the first 3 innings Click to view fullsize imageallowing 3 hits, 3 runs and 5 strikeouts. After Bethel scored 2 unearned runs in the fourth inning Chris Peck pitched an excellent 5th, 6th and 7th inning for the victory. He struck out 5 and allowed only 2 hits. In the New Fairfield forth the Bethel pitchers could not find the plate and 10 New Falrfield batters came up with 3 runs scoring on RBI's by Cory Calvin, Scott Allen and Irwin. Jon Hickey and Mike Schirmer were both robbed on nice fielding plays in the sixth. Some fine fielding plays were turned in by Chris Cannaverde, Mike Schirmer and Danny Filmer.

10/27 game two: New Fairfield 7 Bethel 4.

Click to view fullsize imageThe second game of the double-header started out as a pitchers duel between the Bethel and New Fairfield's Danny Filmer. Both pitchers matched zeros for the first three innings. Filmer allowed 1 walk and struck out three without allowing a hit. James Purtle made the fielding gem in the first inning snagging a liner and turning it into a double play. In the Bethel fourth some wildness, fielding lapses and a couple of nice hits by Bethel plated 4 runs. NF still couldn't score in their half of the fourth. Mike Schirmer then came on in the top of the fifth and held Bethel scoreless the remainder of the game. Schirmer allowed no hits, struck out one and only walked one. NF finally woke up in their half of the fifth. Greg Irwin and Danny Filmer Click to view fullsize imageboth walked to start the inning. After a fielders choice, Andrew Ballas walked to drive in the fIrst run, James Purtle then hit into a fielder's choice when Donny Allen sprinted home the throw was late to first. Chris Cannaverde then followed with a 2 RBI single, his third hit of the game. Schirmer, who singled earlier, then reached on an error to score the fifth run. NF then scored two insurance runs in the sixth. With one out Filmer reached on an error, and scored ona booming triple by Donnie Allen. Allen then scored on Chris Peck's single. The game ended on two nice plays by Ballas in the 7th.
